LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- This story begins with a thank you . . . a thanks to you for making the WHAS Crusade for Children America's most successful telethon.

The Crusade takes off again Saturday and Sunday, June 7 & 8, to help children with special needs.

We thank you and some very hard working firefighters.

The firefighters are the backbone of the WHAS Crusade for Children.

Firefighters hit the street with boots and cans in hand and a love of children in their hearts.

The McMahan fire department was on Hikes Lane on Thursday saying the giving is good.

Residents said the reason they give is simply because "it's the right thing to do."

Firefighters are the real stars of the show, but throughout the years, some Hollywood star power has helped as well.

The stars align each year to bring our community together for something magical and miraculous . . . like the Miracle Dancers.

The children, after all, is why we do it.

Through the years, all that change has added up to $154 million to help special needs children in Kentucky and Indiana.

The Crusade had humble beginnings in 1954 and one big thing missing was missing. Firefighters didn't come on board until 1956 with PRP donating $400 and challenging other departments to do the same.

It's not just the volunteer firefighters any more. Louisville Fire and Rescue was in the collecting act as well on Thursday at 4th and Market.

They know the drill and so do you, because as we've all learned, no amount of giving is too small.
