LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Any time you move from one home to another there are a series of problems that can pop up, and for senior citizens the list is even longer. But there are services that can help ease the transition. Good Morning Kentuckiana's Andy Treinen explains in Friday's Consumer Watch.
Moving an elderly loved one with a lifetime of belongings can be overwhelming. That's why companies specializing in senior move management are taking off.
Some folks can no longer do their own heavy lifting, but moving services for seniors includes everything from packing and unpacking to downsizing, organizing and decorating. Senior move managers even lay out furniture to make sure it will fit in your often smaller setup.
"We make a floor plan so they can see exactly, we measure their furniture, measure the new apartment, so they can see exactly where it's going to be placed in the new home," said Senior Move Manager Jan Tienhaara.
According to the Angie’s List website, services can be selected on a case-by-case basis, and that's a good thing because no two situations are the same. But the main goal is making the primary living area look as much like it did in the old home as possible.
"One of the things that is often overlooked is helping you set up the home of the elderly person to look just like their old home so they FEEL comfortable and familiar right away," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.
That familiarity is so important because of the frustration your loved one is probably already feeling with the move. Just remember that it's a move most of us will have to make some day, so approach it with some empathy.
