Jeffersonville, Ind. (WHAS11) - The city of Jeffersonville is making way for the new Big Four Bridge ramp.
On Tuesday, city workers started demolishing vacant homes at the southwest corner of Chestnut and Pearl streets.
Mayor Tom Galligan even got in on the action.
WHAS11 caught him climbing into a backhoe and flattening a building.
Once the space is cleared the new Big Four Bridge ramp will be built along with a new downtown canal and a hotel.
“We think it’s the starting of a new downtown, rejuvenation of downtown. We think it’s very important and I think it’s going to help everybody's property value down here,” said Mayor Tom Galligan.
The first round of demolitions should be done in the next few weeks.
Construction on the Big Four Bridge ramp and the downtown canal is expected to start early next year.
