Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - The thrills of live racing at Churchill Downs just keep getting better with the addition of Summer N' Spires Festival, a new music and food festival taking place on Saturday, May 31.
Guests can enjoy a full day of exhilarating racing, live music by local bands, partake of specialty foods and craft beers, and participate in a free handicapping seminar.
General admission is $3.
The Churchill Downs Plaza is the main place to be between races to listen to live performances by the country and rock band Mike Short and Outlaw Revival and the classic rock band Thumper and the Plaid Rabbits.
The Plaza's summer-festival atmosphere is further enhanced by a variety of craft beer offerings from Anheuser-Busch and specialty foods served up by some of Louisville's more popular food trucks. Among those on hand serving up their diverse fare are Busta Grill, Grind, Holy Mole, Lil Cheezers and the Louisville Dessert truck.
Free Basics of Betting Seminar
Racing fans interested in learning more about race handicapping are invited to participate in a free Basics of Betting Seminar hosted by Jennie Rees, turf writer for the Courier-Journal and includes helpful insights from industry insiders such as retired jockey Donna Barton Brothers, Ed DeRosa of Brisnet.com, Jessie Oswald of Louisville.com, and Churchill Downs' own John Asher, Jill Byrne and Gary Palmisano. During the seminar, guests will learn how to review past performances, basic handicapping principles, and how to spot a hot trainer or jockey.
The seminar begins at noon and runs through 1:30 pm in the Churchill Downs Parlay (just inside Gate 1) and then moves out to section 117 in the Grandstand where each race will be individually analyzed and discussed.
The Parlay portion of the seminar is limited to the first 170 who register by clicking here, with the first 100 registrants receiving free Churchill Downs admission and a racing program. The second half of the seminar starts about 1:30 pm in the undercover portion of section 117 and is open to everyone.
The gates to Churchill Downs open at 11:30 am and first post is at 12:45 pm.
The event will return during the September meet as Fall N'Spires Festival on Sunday, Sept. 28.
