LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Central High School Magnet Career Academy unveiled their new aquatic center Thursday. The cutting-edge pool is complete with the Yellow Jacket logo right in the center. While the facility sports the school's mascot, it will benefit students across the district, as well has hundreds more community members.
The pool is 125,000 gallons and 25 yards. Middle and high school swim teams throughout JCPS will use it for competitive swimming practices and meets. The Central physical education classes, JROTC and Exceptional Child Education Program will also use the pool. Even area elementary students will be able to use it for swim lessons.
The pool will also be open to the community. There will be water aerobics classes and lap-swim times starting in September.
The center was originally built in the 1971-1972 school year, and was one of the first indoor facilities in the district. It closed in the early 2000s and remained vacant for years. The renovation was sparked by members of the community and the school system who wanted to see the building in use.
