LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- More than a thousand local kids are going back to school with the supplies they need thanks to the Backpack Angel Program.
The backpacks were handed out Thursday afternoon at the Shawnee Neighborhood Place at Shawnee High School.
Inside, students found notebooks, crayons, markers and other supplies.
Families also got to enjoy ice cream.
Around 50 volunteers from Target, Strategic Communications and others gathered to assist.
Volunteers said the event gets bigger every year and Service for Peace is still in need of donations for the Backpack Angel Program.
Donations of cash or school supplies can be made at any of the five area Marks Feed Store restaurants until August 31.
