LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A special ceremony was held Saturday and WHAS11's own Doug Proffitt was the emcee.

The annual Big Brothers Big Sisters "Big of the Year" awards were held at the Big Brothers Big Sisters headquarters on Gardiner.

This year's award winners:

High School Big of the Year:  Jocelyn Church

This year's winner comes from North Oldham High School.  She helped her Little Sister adjust to a new school this year, assisting her with math and feeling confident in her new school setting. Her Little Sister Shelby says "Jocelyn helps me when times get rough.  She's teaching me lessons that I can carry with me my whole life.  I think she should get this award because she's nice and always cares about everyone else.  She's like a sister I've never had!"

Peggy Stengel Boone Memorial Award (Southern Indiana):  Paul Kilbourne
This year's winner is from Harrison County, IN.  He has remained dedicated to his Little Brother Tyler, despite a demanding travel schedule for work.  He and Tyler spend much of their time bowling, skating, and going to the movies.

Tyler's mom says that even after 1 year, Tyler watches out the window for his Big Brother when it is time for an activity. This Big Brother's dedication has given Tyler the confidence to do better and school.  His teacher indicated that he has become quite a math whiz!

Big Sister of the Year:  Rose Booth
Our Big Sister of the Year comes from Grayson County Kentucky and has been matched with her Little Sister, Paddie, for over 1 year.

This Big Sister is not only a fiercely dedicated mentor, but a BBBS advisory council member and the top Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser in her county. She has involved Paddie in community service activities, helped her in school, and regularly sets up exciting new experiences for her.

Paddie's grandmother says "Rose really goes above and beyond what a Big needs to do, and everything she does comes straight from her heart! I can't explain how much she's made such a difference in Paddie's life".

Big Brother of the Year:  Jeff Gripp
Our Big Brother of the Year comes from Louisville.  He's been matched with his Little Brother, Hunter, for almost 2 years.

This match shares a passion for military history and video games.  They spend time swimming, going to museums, playing laser tag, and working on school projects.

Hunter's mother greatly appreciates this Big Brother's time - since he's a full time student and works two jobs.  She credits him for Hunter's good grades and interest in attending college.

Hunter says "My Big teaches me to be nice and to care for others.  He makes me laugh and makes me want to do well in school and life.  I want to go to college and maybe someday become a Big Brother just like Jeff."

Congratulations and thanks to all of the Big of the Year nominees.  It was a tough competition this year:
