Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - A brand new weather satellite will be launched Thursday evening.

It's called the GOES-S, and it is a big deal! This new satellite will help meteorologists like us here on the First Alert Storm Team better our forecasts for you in Kentuckiana.

So what can this thing do? The GOES-S scans the earth five times faster than old satellites with triple the number of channels that allow it to see different wavelengths of light.

Why is this a big deal? The GOES-S technology will help give us better data to forecast snow, ice, clouds and storms that begin in the western half of the country and eventually impact us right here in Louisville.
