LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The start of the Kentucky Derby Festival is weeks away but an annual tradition returns to stores Monday.

The official Pegasus Pins will head to 1,000 retail locations across Kentucky and southern Indiana.

This year’s pin design is a throwback to the original Pegasus Pin designed in 1973 – featuring a cutout design with a warm red colored Pegasus in the center.

The pins can be purchased at local grocery stores, banks, gas stations and other retail outlets.

Officials say they are giving away 8 weekly grand prizes including VIP tickets to the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.

The pins are $6 or $7 at the entrance to events. KDF organizers says the family 5 pack will also be available at $25.
