LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11)--Wheelchair tennis is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports around the world. A local organization wants you to play - whether you're in a wheelchair or not.
USTA KY, in partnership with the West Louisville Tennis Club and Metro Parks and Recreation, is offering a free clinic on December 2 in Louisville. There will also be a clinic in Lexington on December 15. It's for anyone interested in learning more about wheelchair tennis.
Emmy Kaiser is your typical kid. She played every sport growing up, but wheelchair tennis caught her attention.
"I like to relax and do my own thing on the court. I've just been introduced to a lot of people all over the world because of it and they're really really cool people," Kaiser said.
She played wheelchair tennis in the Paralympics in London and Rio De Janeiro. She wants to go again to Tokyo in 2020.
"Once I got to London, I had to play one of the top British girls in the second round on center court. So, packed stadium center court, all of the hometown girls So, that was absolutely terrifying cause I had never played in that front of a crowd like that but it was a really good experience just to learn how to focus on the court, ignore everything that is going on," Kaiser said.
Laura Kenney started playing to be more active.
"It means a lot it to me. It's a wonderful experience. I think anyone should try it," Kenney said.
"I mean I want to get really good at it but I don't know if I will be good enough to go into tournaments and such but I will certainly try my best."
The wheelchair tennis community is growing in Kentucky but this group wants to spread the word even more.
Kenney encourages everyone to give the sport a try. "You may be shy and you may feel weak but you're never weak. You're just strong and I always say sometimes weakness is a strength."
The free clinic in Louisville is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Berrytown Recreation Center on 1300 Heafer Road.
You can register by calling 502-456-8148.
The free clinic in Lexington is December 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the UK Hilary J Boone Varsity Indoor Tennis Courts at 454 Complex.
