Volunteers, organizations make way for new housing in Shelby Park

The non-profit House of Ruth partnered with River City Housing to build a duplex for families impacted by HIV and AIDS.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A group of volunteers rolled up their sleeves Saturday to make way for a new housing unit in Shelby Park.

Volunteers removed lots of brush and small trees from a lot at the corner of South Hancock and East Kentucky Streets.

The non-profit House of Ruth partnered with River City Housing to build a duplex for families impacted by HIV and AIDS.

House of Ruth provides assistance to families who are homeless, at risk of losing their homes or in need of financial help.

Officials say this is the organization’s first residential build in 18 years.

“Sadly, we are not moving away from stigma. We refer to the HIV epidemic and the HIV stigma epidemic. There is still a great deal of stigma and discrimination for our clients every day,” Lisa Sutton, House of Ruth executive director, said.

The Louisville Metro Housing Authority donated the land for the new construction.

The duplex should be finished by the end of the year.
