Louisville shelter animals get Thanksgiving meal with all of the fixings

More than 200 dogs and cats were given a holiday meal just like everyone else.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — -- Tis the season to be thankful and share with those less fortunate. For the lucky dogs and cats at Louisville Metro Animal Services that meant a warm meal with all the fixings.

Founder and President of Rudy Green’s Karla Haas said, "Ground turkey, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, green beans, celery, bread cubes, stuffing and cranberries."

It’s a Thanksgiving meal like the one you'll see on your plate tomorrow, but this bowl is for a special crowd.

"It’s a very special treat for shelter pets,” Teeya Barnes, LMAS, said.

More than 200 dogs and cats were given a holiday meal just like everyone else.

"It means so much more to the staff to have something special for the animals too. They live this day in and day out. And just to give them a something a little different and make them feel like the holidays even here in the shelter,” Haas said.

Rudy Green’s Doggy Cuisine cooked up the creation. They’ve done it at other shelters for the past ten years.

"It’s great just to see them really enjoy a meal,” Haas said.

"Little things can go a long way in helping a shelter dog lift its spirits. It’s a very stressful environment. It’s loud, it’s smelly,” Barnes said.

It’s a little thing that fills their bellies as they wait for that family that fills their heart. All those pets are up for adoption and in desperate need of a new home.

If you're thinking about expanding your family, this could be the weekend to do it. All adult dogs over 40 pounds and cats older than six months will be free.
