Pikeville officer shot and killed in line of duty

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An overnight shooting has claimed the life of a Pikeville police officer.

According to officials, Police Officer Scotty Hamilton was shot and killed in the line of duty.

According to KSP, Hamilton was investigating a stolen vehicle at home. While outside, Hamilton followed what appeared to be fresh tracks in the snow leading to the back of the residence. That's when he was shot multiple times in an ambush. Officer Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene.

KSP will be conducting a murder investigation.

Hamilton has been a member of the Pikeville Police Department since 2006.

While several people were taken into custody, police say they're still looking for the shooting suspect.
