LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- It certainly wasn't a close vote but it was a hot topic of conversation.
“If medical marijuana, medical hemp, cannabis oil is the only thing that will help my grandchild or my child stop the suffering from seizures, you bet I'm going to push for it,” said Councilwoman Cindi Fowler, District 14.
“When we talk about marijuana, whether it's medical or not, it's a drug. Therefore, I will be voting against this particular resolution,” said Councilwoman Mary Woolridge, District 3.
In a 20-4 vote, Metro Council passed a resolution in support of the legalization of medical cannabis in Kentucky. This comes after a series of town hall events allowed for public input.
“I too have learned so much through this process even thought I am a registered nurse and have worked for 34 years as a nurse. This is like a miracle treatment for so many people,” said Councilwoman Vicki Aubrey Welch, District 13.
But for some on the council, it's just too early to support the proposed state legislation for the legalization of medical marijuana.
“We don't really know what the state bill is going to look like and I think if maybe the timing was just a little off on this. If we had done this six months from now, I may just be totally different,” said Councilwoman Marilyn Parker, District 18.
The resolution does not take any action. It is more just a symbol of support to legalize medical cannabis.
Governor Matt Bevin says he would support the legalization of medical marijuana if it is regulated properly. But he does not support recreational use.
