Mayor Fischer: I am opposed to state takeover of JCPS

"I also voiced my strong support for our teachers and principals, Dr. Marty Pollio and local control of our school. I am opposed to a state takeover," he said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer made his strongest stance against a state takeover of JCPS in a video released Friday, after meeting with interim Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner Dr. Wayne Lewis.

"I also voiced my strong support for our teachers and principals, Dr. Marty Pollio and local control of our school. I am opposed to a state takeover," he said.

JCPS board member Linda Duncan met with Lewis earlier this week and expects an answer Monday. She says the support and faith many have in new Superintendent Dr. Pollio should be considered in Lewis' decision.

"I've been here since 1970 through several superintendents and I've never seen the united support that Dr. Pollio has," she told WHAS11.

Duncan says the district is ready to file an appeal should Lewis rule in favor of a takeover, vowing the district plans a legal fight. "If that is announced, we feel there are avenues for us to address this and we will do that no matter how long it takes," Duncan said.

Dr. Pollio took to social media Friday briefly discussing Dr. Lewis' visit on the district's YouTube page.

"Really got the opportunity to highlight the incredible work that we have done as a team and a group over the past 10 months," Dr. Pollio said in his 'Weekly Wrap Up' video.

The director of communications for the Kentucky Department of Education told WHAS11 she imagines the audit material and the decision would be released by mid-afternoon Monday.
