LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11) - Going to school every day can be tough for any kid, but especially when food is scarce at home. A major donation is making sure children across Kentuckiana don’t have to struggle with that for years to come.

Friday morning, the auditorium at Alex Kennedy Elementary became a workshop of sorts. The team wearing capes and costumes may have looked like they were just playing a superhero for the day, but what they're doing is leading to a lasting difference. The bags they filled aren’t just full of food. They’re also overflowing with love and care.

"To a lot of people, it just seems like a little something, but to these children, it's a lot,” Blessings in a Backpack CMO Nikki Grizzle said.

Delta Dental presented Blessings in a Backpack with a $300,000 check.

"A lot of these children go home every weekend when there's no school breakfast or lunch, and there's nothing at home. So, what we do with partners like Delta Dental is provide these children with a little bit of safety and a little bit of food to get them through the weekend,” Grizzle said.

The saying every penny counts is said all of the time, but it couldn’t be truer in this situation. Thanks to this donation a thousand children across the Commonwealth will have one of the food bags in their backpack every Friday for the next three years.

"Kids don't learn well when they're hungry and that's a problem, but it's also a problem that has a fix,” Delta Dental Kentucky President & CEO Dr. Cliff Maesaka said.

Delta Dental also took things a step further, putting a toothbrush in every single bag.

"Especially this weekend being Halloween, it's so important. Kids are going to eat candy, that's unavoidable,” Maesaka said.

Since Blessings in a Backpack launched in 2008, it’s ensured the well-being of so many students. As of today, the program serves 6,000 kids in Kentuckiana and nearly 90,000 children across the U.S.

Nothing warms your heart more than a child thanking you for food,” Grizzle said.
