LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – This winter will be a lot warmer for those in need thanks to a dedicated group of local students.Johnson Traditional Middle School collected nearly 700 scarves, hats, and gloves for the project.
This morning, they tied the items to fences and poles around the neighborhood.
The students behind the project are on the Discovery Team, which is the part of the school's special education program.
Teachers say giving back to the community helps their kids overcome obstacles and stereotypes.
"For our students to have something go from start to finish and have it look as amazing as it does means the world to us, and I know it means the world to our kids," Jodi Cox ECE Teacher, Johnson Middle School, said.
"I feel very happy. God gave us a really special thing to do for some people, and I really thank my school for doing this," Tavion Fletcher 7th Grader, Johnson Middle School, said. Each item came with a special tag and message attached to it, reading in part "I'm not lost, if you are cold, take me, and I'll keep you warm."
