NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) – University police are working to identify the person who pulled a gun during a fight Monday night on IU Southeast’s campus.

Chief Stephen Miller said a fight broke out sometime after 9 p.m. Monday in the Activities Building, where an open gym was being held. The open gym sessions allow the facility to be used by the community.

Miller said the suspect, who is not believed to be a student, pulled the gun from a backpack. He reportedly fled the area before police arrived.

Police issued a campus-wide lockdown as they searched for the gunman. The “all clear” was given approximately 45 minutes later, when the suspect could not be located.

Information from witnesses and video surveillance allowed officers to get a good description of the suspect. While police have not yet named the alleged gunman, Miller said he is from Louisville.

As a precautionary measure, IUS is temporarily operating the Activities Building gymnasium on restricted hours. It will close at 5 p.m. daily until further notice.
