INDIANAPOLIS (WHAS11) -- The effort to legalize marijuana for medical purposes in Indiana, has a new supporter—the American Legion of Indiana.

The veterans’ organization announced its stance today after a National American Legion survey found there is growing support for medical marijuana research and for the use of marijuana to treat mental and physical ailments.

The Legion plans to urge lawmakers to reclassify the drug and recognize its potential medical value. However, earlier this week the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council announced its opposition to any legalization attempt.
