LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – One of the city’s beloved treasures, The Belle of Louisville, is getting some company.
The head of Waterfront Development has purchased a new riverboat to replace the Spirit of Jefferson.
The Georgia Queen will join the Belle this summer on the Fourth Street Wharf.
The diesel-powered vessel based in Savannah, Georgia can carry 565 people in comparison to the roughly 300 people the Spirit can carry.
When the ship arrives, it will receive a few upgrades and will be renamed.
The money to buy the boat came from money raised from the Centennial Celebration and reserves from the Belle of Louisville.
Officials say funds designated for the park will not be spent to buy the boat.
