LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- In 15 days, the waterfront will be a little louder, when one of the largest fireworks displays in the nation caps off a day of food, fun and air displays. Thunder Over Louisville marks the Opening Ceremonies for the Kentucky Derby Festival, a tradition for many Kentuckiana families.
"We go up on the levy up there off Story Avenue, my family and I go up there, on top of that. It’s gotten quite crowded up there over the years. People found our hotspot. So that is where we will be at though," said Eddie Hayes, a Louisville resident.
With Thunder just over two weeks away, venues on both sides of the river are gearing up for one of the busiest days of the year.
"By the time it is Saturday morning we have to be ready to go because, as I said, people will line up even though the doors don’t open until 2:00," said Mike Porto, Kentucky Center Senior Marketing and Communications Director.
Porto said besides the events outside they will have entertainment planned for kids of all ages inside.
"There's activities all day long, starting at 2:00 we have activities going on within the center, there's lots of food and drink and at 3:30 to 7:00 we have activities for kids, so art activities, threes a drum circle happening and we have a teen hip hop thing going on so there's lots of things to do while we are waiting for the big finale with the fireworks," said Porto.
Other venues along the waterfront hosting events include the Kentucky Science Center and the Yum! Center. Both still have tickets available.
