LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Three JCPS elementary school students are recovering after a tragic accident at a school bus stop Thursday morning.

"It’s terrible. It’s terrible. It’s really terrible," one witness said.

It was a horrific scene in the 3200 block of Dumesnil. Police tape and officers marked the scene after a report of three children struck by an SUV.

It happened at a bus stop that serves about 20 different children every morning, according to school officials.

Some of the students were there when the accident happened. One told WHAS11 she watched the accident. She said, “My friends got hit.”

According to police, the driver of a Cadillac Escalade did not see a school bus stopping ahead and swerved to miss it. The bus driver reports the driver of the Cadillac was trying to “beat the light."

Police report the driver swerved to the right of the bus, drove onto the sidewalk and hit three children.

"When the truck hit, it was a little girl that was stuck underneath the truck...," one witness said.

"We hollered and got some guys to come over and we raised the car up and police pulled them out. They pulled the little girl out, and I’m going to tell you she was in bad shape but I was thanking God that she was still breathing," another witness told WHAS11.

Family said that little girl is 9-year-old Vanessa Johnson. She was rushed to the Children's Hospital where family said she went straight into surgery.

Her 10-year-old brother, Joc, was also hit and taken to the hospital. Family said he has a few broken bones but is conscious. Both Vanessa and Joc are students at Dixie Elementary School.

The third child taken to the hospital was in critical condition upon arrival. The mother of that child confirms he is OK. He is a student at Engelhard Elementary School.

Allison Martin with JCPS said, “It’s a tragedy for our JCPS family--I don’t know a person here in JCPS that hasn’t been deeply moved and affected by what’s happened today."

Police said the person driving the vehicle is in serious condition and will be charged with no insurance, and no registration.
