LONDON, Ky. — A McCreary County deputy is in critical condition after getting shot Tuesday night during a welfare check.

According to Kentucky State Police, a McCreary County Deputy sheriff and a constable went to a home on Lick Creek Road around 8 p.m. to do a welfare check. When they arrived, they found 48-year-old Mark Dungan inside of a vehicle.

As the deputy approached the car, Dungan shot several rounds at him, hitting him at least once. Dungan then drove away, hitting the patrol car head-on before continuing down Lick Creek Road.

Troopers found Dungan a little bit later in a cemetery and took him into custody.

The deputy that was shot was flown to University of Tennessee Medical Center and is in critical condition. There were no other injuries reported.

Kentucky State Police will continue the investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available.
