Kentucky Center damage assessments still underway; no timeline for repairs

PNC Broadway production Waitress has been canceled at the Kentucky Center.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- There is bad news for Louisville Broadway fans. The Kentucky Center leaders announced the center will not be re-opened in time for next week's production "Waitress." At this time, there is no definite timeline as to when the center will begin hosting shows again.

State leaders said they are still discovering damage inside the Kentucky Center while working with contractors and engineers to evaluate the structure and the roof.

"We are still in the discovery stage- there are still many unknowns and we are looking at that right now," William Landrum, Secretary of the Finance and Administration Cabinet, said.

At this time, they say there is still more work to be done as the lobby, basement, HVAC systems, control rooms, dressing rooms and carpet are drenched.

The roof, where the fire started and was contained, suffered the most damage and is still be evaluated. Contractors are now peeling back layers of that barrel roof to expose any unknowns and ensure the building is up to code.

“We're going to be working as fast as we can to have a better understanding of what needs to be done and assess what we need moving forward," Landrum said.

Leaders say safety is their main priority so they will not be re-opening the facility until they are confident that everyone who comes and goes can do so safely.

Officials hope to have a timeline for repairs by the end of next week.

Those who purchased tickets to next week's show can get full refunds.
