LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) - The holiday season is upon us, and that can often bring with it all sorts of sweet treats. Sure they taste great, but they aren’t always the best for you.

Starches are easily converted into sugar. Health expert David Foreman, who is also known as The Herbal Pharmacist, said foods like pasta, pizza, and rice automatically get converted to sugar when the body starts to digest them. The body then uses that sugar for energy or stores it as fat.

Carbs aren’t all bad though.

Foreman said keeping them in check all comes down to how you prepare or eat carbs and also adding optional supplements. Keeping your leftover pizza or pasta cold can cut the calories by half. Doing that keeps some of the starch from breaking down into sugar.

“I think a lot of times when people want to be healthy, they think it’s an overwhelming thing and what I’m trying to teach people is being healthy isn’t necessarily an overwhelming and daunting task,” Foreman said. “These things really aren’t that difficult. It just takes a little planning and thinking and eventually becomes part of your lifestyle. One of my favorite sayings with this whole topic of how to prepare or eat your foods the right way is carbs are half off today.”

Foreman also recommended using coconut oil, especially for cooking white rice. He said use one tablespoon of oil per cup of white rice. Then, it needs to go in the refrigerator for 12 hours. It can be reheated after that, but the coconut oil takes out about half of the calories.

A study showed storing white bread in the freezer and then putting straight in the toaster reduces the effect on a person’s blood sugar by almost 40 percent.

There are also supplements available. Phase 2 is a pill that has white kidney bean extract. It helps with weight loss, blood sugar, and cholesterol. It works as a starch blocker and can be taken before eating a meal, especially one with a lot of carbs. Foreman said the studies show it can block the starch by up to 65 percent.
