LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Laurel Oskins, a fifth grade reading teacher at Farmer Elementary School in Jefferson County has won the WHAS-TV ExCel Award.

Mrs. Oskins was honored with the ExCel golden apple in ceremonies at the school on Wednesday, February 17.

The Bellarmine University graduate is a National Board Certified Teacher who is an acknowledged teacher leader with a passion for teaching.

Oskins said she loves to read, and when she goes on vacation her summer reading is mostly children's books.

She loves the challenge of children who come into her room in August and say they don't like to read. Oskins said it's simply a matter of finding the right book for the right student to instill the love of reading.Once they find that book or books, Oskins said her new readers are ready to fly.

In addition to her reading classroom, Oskins committed an entire year to the Louisville Writing Project and returned to the summer program two years later in a leadership position.
Mrs. Oskins is one of thirteen teachers who will receive the ExCel during this academic years. Six of those awards will be in Jefferson County. Eight other awards will be presented in Kentuckiana School districts.
