LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – An SUV was lying on its side and dented by bullets on Tuesday afternoon after several shots were fired south of Broadway.

“It was a series of loud bangs, about 9 or 10 in a row,” Doug Mier said, who owns Premier Signs on the corner.

Police said it was a drive-by shooting between two cars down Breckenridge Street, close to 8th Street that caused a white SUV to roll over. That’s when another witness told WHAS11 News that the driver crawled out of the vehicle.

“The dust settled and I saw a dude get up and run for it,” Wendy Wolfe explained. “I believe he popped open that side door, he struggled to get out, stumbled a little bit and took off.”

Police on scene said the man ran through neighbors’ yards to College Court Apartments, where a friend met him and brought him to the hospital.

“It honestly didn't surprise me,” Mier said. He purchased the property for Premier Signs in 2014.

“We made a decision to move to this location to try to help businesses in the West End. It really was a conscious decision, I'm not sure it was a good one now, but we're trying.”

He said it's lucky no one else got hurt because of the near dozen shots fired from one moving vehicle towards another.

“The young people that are doing this, they're not thinking about anything like that. There were people outside.”

Police said the man suffered two gunshot wounds, but is expected to live. It’s news that came as a shock to some, after what they had witnessed.

“The gunshots I saw on the windshield, I don't know how he jumped out and ran. Have no clue,” Wolfe said.

There are no suspects at this time. Anyone with information can call 574-LMPD.
