LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Police continue to search for a suspect in the killing of a St. Matthews man outside Mallgate apartments.

Matthew Upton, 26, was shot just before 9 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Quails Run, where he lived. He was later pronounced dead at University Hospital.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she walked outside her apartment after hearing five gunshots. She found Upton’s wounded body in between two cars in the parking lot.

“Every day he said hello to me, he was friends with everyone in the building. I can’t imagine any reason why this would happen to someone as kind as him. I’ve never had a nicer neighbor,” said the witness.

The young husband and father lived just steps away from where he was shot. He reportedly told his wife to stay inside and lock the door moments before the shooting occurred, according to the neighbor.

“He knew something was coming but I have no idea why or who did anything,” she said. “He knew there was some sort of imminent danger.”

St. Matthews police have released few details about the case, only confirming that it is a homicide investigation and the suspect is still at large. Police have given no indication whether the crime was a targeted or random act.

“It didn’t seem random,” said the neighbor. “It’s the back corner of an apartment complex with hundreds of units. There’s absolutely no reason for anyone to walk around that area and randomly pick someone off.”

This is the first homicide in St. Matthews in two and a half years. The last homicide happened in July 2015 in a different section of the same apartment complex.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the St. Matthews Police Dept. at (502) 893-9000.
