LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Police are investigating what led up to a man and woman’s death at a home near the Algonquin neighborhood Sunday.

Police were dispatched to a home in the 1800 block of Oregon Avenue around 4:45 p.m.

“I believe a family member may have alerted us that they hadn’t heard from them, and we were able to gain entry inside. That’s where we found them,” LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said. “This appears to be a murder-suicide. We have two persons dead. They appear to have been boyfriend and girlfriend. They do have a child in common.”

Police said both the man and woman were shot, but haven’t said who shot who. Investigators said the couple’s child was home at the time of the crime, but not hurt. They aren’t sure if the child actually witnessed the shootings.

“It’s hard to tell with a child. I don’t know, and I hope they did not,” Mitchell said. “You know, we’re still in the very early stages in a very traumatic situation for family and friends.”

This crime is leaving others in the neighborhood concerned for their loved ones. Marvin Johnson said his son called him after hearing the news.

“I said okay, I’ll go home and check and I’ll call you back. He was already worried and everything. So, I’m going to have to call him and tell him that dad is okay because dad was over at Churchill Downs. He didn’t know where I was at, and some of my other friends are probably going to ask me,” Johnson said.

Johnson has called Oregon Avenue home since the 70s. He said he doesn't know the couple, but never noticed any problems on his street.

“This is usually a pretty quiet neighborhood. I would’ve came home, went in the house, and that would’ve been it,” Johnson said.

Since police believe this case is a murder-suicide, they said they aren't looking for any suspects. However, LMPD's homicide unit still takes the lead in these kinds of investigations.

“It changes things because we’re not looking for anybody. It doesn’t change the fact that we have two deceased people that lost their lives here. It’s very tragic, and very tragic for the family and the friends and the individuals,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said the couple’s child is staying with other family members.
