Non-profit sending blankets to Marshall County High School students

Volunteers are hard at work making blankets for those affected by the Marshall County shooting tragedy.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - Becky Jew is loading up for a road trip she never thought she’d have to make, but it’s one she wants to take after hearing of the deadly Marshall County High School shooting nearly three weeks ago.

"You’ve heard of other shootings across the country and you never really think it’s going to so close to home, but when it does, it has a major impact on you,” she told WHAS11.

In the weeks that followed the shooting, Jew and other volunteers got to work stitching and sewing blankets through Project Linus, a national non-profit that makes blankets for children who are suffering.

The Shelby County chapter set a goal of 100, but the donations poured in and Jew is packing up nearly 200 blankets.

"I want them to realize that they are not going to be forgotten. That the whole country is believing in them and are supporting them," Jew said of the students and the Marshall County School District.

Volunteer Barbara Donnahoe jumped right in. The former preschool teacher answered the call to help and she hasn’t stopped thinking of the students who were injured and the two who died. "It has to be stopped. There’s just no reason for it. Just no reason whatsoever," she said.

Collectively, Jew says the various Project Linus chapters from across the country made enough blankets to give to every Marshall County High School student. It's a noble gesture for a school district and a community that could some comforting. "Hopefully they will feel some love from everybody and that the world isn’t a bad place after all," Jew said.

She and two other volunteers will spend the night Sunday at a Lake Barkley resort in western Kentucky and then head to Marshall County High School Monday morning. Other Project Linus chapters already shipped their blankets to the school and Jew plans to hand them out during lunchtime Monday.
