LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Saying a clean neighborhood is a safer neighborhood, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has announced a series of West Louisville community cleanups.

Clean Lou will join city employees, volunteers and residents to clean up streets and alleys in 6 high-crime neighborhoods.

The initiative goes along with the Building Our Blocks effort that launched last year.

As part of that program, city employees go door to door providing services like lead testing and checking smoke detectors.

Both efforts will take place in the Russell neighborhood.

Building Our Blocks will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Friday starting at Quinn Chapel Church.

Clean Lou will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday ending with a community picnic at Baxter Square Park.
