Scheller's Fitness & Cycling reopens in original St. Matthews location

The local-owned sporting shop was destroyed in a multi-business fire on Breckinridge Lane in June 2019.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — According to a release, Scheller's Fitness and Cycling in St. Matthews has reopened after being destroyed in a multi-business fire on Breckenridge Lane in June 2019.

Several business on the strip mall where Scheller's was located were destroyed by a fire caused by a light fixture in one of the businesses failing.

The 7624-square-foot new store located in the same spot has a more open design layout creating a customer-friendly shopping environment, the release says.

“It was that sense of community that made us determined to stay in St. Matthews,” said CFO and co-owner, Greg Scheller. “Finding a temporary location and reopening a permanent one has been very stressful on everyone. But we made certain our employees continued to have jobs at other Scheller’s sites while everyone worked tirelessly to turn this tragedy into triumph.”

Scheller’s has called Kentuckiana home for 42 years and has six area locations, including St. Matthews which sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

On the day of the fire, family, friends and strangers worked quickly to save 60 bikes by forming a human chain to extricate the products.

“Looking back at where we were and how far we’ve come, it really is a testimonial to the hard work of my brother Marty and our manager, John Molnar, and his entire St. Matthews staff," Scheller said.

Scheller's Fitness and Cycling first opened in 1979 and has six-area locations.
