Jared Heil joined WHAS-TV as a meteorologist in 2015, and, as a lifetime Kentuckiana resident, is proud to be a part of the WHAS-11 First Alert Storm Team!
Since he was a child, Jared had a passion for weather. Like most meteorologists, what started from watching the clouds later budded into a career.
Jared has several years of experience forecasting the various weather systems that affect Kentuckiana. Prior to joining WHAS, he was a meteorologist at WLKY-TV in Louisville from 2010 to early 2015.
Jared graduated with honors from the University of Louisville Atmospheric Science program. He also holds the distinction of Certified Broadcast Meteorologist – given by the American Meteorological Society to on-camera meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations.
Jared feels fortunate to have the opportunity to forecast the weather in his hometown. He was born and raised in Henryville, Ind., about 20 minutes north of downtown Louisville. Jared's knowledge of the Greater Louisville area, along with its unique weather and geography, gives him the added ability to pinpoint dangerous and active weather for area residents – at a moment's notice.
One particular weather event in our area hit very close to home for Jared on March 2, 2012, when an EF4 tornado struck his hometown of Henryville and other southern Indiana communities. While his family took cover, he was on the air, helping keep viewers safe from the dangerous storms. Jared is proud of his community, noting that he feels blessed to live where there are so many caring people helping one another amid tragic circumstances.
In his free time, Jared enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. He has two dogs – Gordon (a golden retriever) and Marco (a toy golden-doodle). Jared says that growing up on his family's farm led him to appreciate nature in all its forms, likely leading to his passion for weather at a very early age.
While he appreciates the occasional thunderstorm, Jared's favorite weather is sunshine and 80 degrees. If there is anything Jared loves more than forecasting the weather, it would be palm trees and ocean sunsets. He visits Southwest Florida as often as he can.
